The Indian Queen (2013)

Henry Purcell died in 1695 while writing his last opera, The Indian Queen. More than three centuries later, Peter Sellars teamed up with a host of collaborators to present the a fresh version of this unpublished final work of Purcell, incorporating some of his most inspired music, as well as a new script adapted from writings of the Nicaraguan novelist Rosario Aguilar. This fusion of dance, music, literature, theater and visual arts depicts the first contact between Europeans and the Maya of the New World, a story of personal conquest through the lives of those women who created a new culture. The work, directed by Peter Sellars with musical directon by Teodor Currentzis, scenic design by Gronk, lighting design by James F. Ingalls, costume design by Dunya Ramicova, and choreography by Christopher Williams, premièred at the Perm Opera & Ballet Theater from September 25th-October 2nd, 2013.
